Box Score SPEARFISH, S.D. - No. 23 Metro State escaped Black Hills State with a 25-23, 25-22, 19-25, 25-23 win on the road in Spearfish, S.D., on Friday evening. The Roadrunners improved to 17-9 overall and 12-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while BHSU fell to 11-18 and 4-14.
Alysa Heath (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) led the team with 14 kills, while
Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) had 13 and
Kylie Haun (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest H.S.) contributed with 10. Quijano hit .417 (13-3-24).
Daleah Whitaker (Denver/Lakewood H.S.) also had an excellent night with eight kills and a .636 hitting percentage (8-1-11) to go with four blocks.
Defensively,
Alex Green (Peoria, Ariz./Cactus H.S.) led the way with 15 digs and setter
Vanessa Gemignani (Colorado Springs/Doherty H.S.) had 12. She also helped the team hit .244 with 43 assists.
Savannah Garcia (Platteville, Colo./Valley H.S.), who had seven digs, also had an excellent night at the service line with team-highs of three aces and 21 serve attempts.
The Yellow Jackets were led by an incredible night from Caitlin Templeton, who had 21 kills, the most for an MSU opponent this season.
BHSU erased a 12-8 Metro State lead in the first set with a five-point run. Metro scored three straight to take a 16-14 lead, but the Yellow Jackets took a 21-20 lead before the Roadrunners scored five of the final seven to win the set.
Trailing 4-1 in the second, MSU scored six of the next seven and led until BHSU tied it at 21-21. Three kills by Heath helped the Roadrunners pull away with four of the final five points.
A pair of four-point runs and a .441 Yellow Jackets hitting percentage doomed Metro State in the third set.
The Roadrunners responded by jumping out to a 6-1 lead in the fourth, but BHSU fought back to tie the set at 7-7. The Yellow Jackets led 15-12 before Garcia served a six-point run as MSU pulled away for an 18-15 lead. Again BHSU took a 21-20 lead. Tied 23-23,
Audri Marrs (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) put down a kill and
Amy Wong (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium H.S.) served an ace to close out the win for Metro State.
MSU wraps up the regular season at Chadron State at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
