Men's basketball: Big three combine for 65 points in 90-64 win at home

Box Score DENVER - Several individual career highs helped propel No. 3 Metro State past Black Hills State 90-64 on Saturday night in the Auraria Event Center.  The win increased the Roadrunner's record to 8-0 while the loss dropped the Yellow Jackets to 2-7 on the season.
 
Metro State had a career-high seven blocks from Jonathan Morse (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) who also had a season-high 15 rebounds.  It was his 26th career double-double combined with his 18 points on 6-of-6 shooting.  Mitch McCarron (Brisbane, Australia/Genesis Christian College) had a career-high 25 points to lead the way for the Roadrunners. Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.) also had a season-high with 22 points of his own and a season-high six assists.
 
Those three players combined for 65 of the team's 90 points. McCarron buried 8-of-15 from the floor, including 4-of-6 from the outside. Jefferson shot 8-of-14 and hit 5-of-6 at the line, while chipping in with six rebounds and three steals. Morse's seven blocks were one off the school record. It was just the fifth time in school history a players has had seven or more blocked shots.
 
Demetrius Miller (Flint, Mich./Flint Central H.S.) scored nine second-half points for MSU after a scoreless first half due to foul trouble.
 
The game started off back-and-forth for both teams as neither team was able to pull away from the other with six lead changes and five times that the score was tied.  McCarron led the way for the Roadrunners in the first half by scoring 19 of his points in the first to help the Roadrunners to a 42-41 halftime advantage. The Yellow Jackets hit seven 3-pointers in the first half and committed just three turnovers.
 
In the second half, the Roadrunners came out more aggressive as they forced the Yellow Jackets to commit 11 turnovers, six of which were steals.  As the Roadrunners turned up the intensity, they were able to pull away in the game as they outscored the Yellow Jackets 48-23 in the second half. 
 
For the game, the Roadrunners were able to shoot 55 percent from the field and hold the Yellow Jackets to 36 percent shooting.  Metro State was able to outrebound Black Hills State 40-35 on the game.  MSU also had a +4 turnover margin as they forced 14 turnovers and only committed 10 of their own.
 
Tanner Adler led BHSU with 24 points and seven rebounds, making 8-of-9 at the line and 7-of-13 from the floor.
 
Metro State will be back in action on Sunday at 5 p.m. when they host Chadron State.
