Men's basketball loses to Chadron State in Denver for first time since 1985

Box Score DENVER - Chadron State rallied from a six-point deficit with under seven minutes left to upset No. 11 Metro State 65-64 on Friday night at the Auraria Event Center. It was the first win for Chadron State over the Roadrunners in Denver since 1985 and it snapped a 25-game overall losing streak in the series with Metro.

The Roadrunners fell to 18-5 overall and 13-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CSC improved to 9-13 overall and 9-9 in the RMAC. It is the fourth loss in the past five games for the Roadrunners

Metro State outscored 26-13 over the first 11 minutes and 12 seconds of the second half, overcoming a four-point halftime deficit. But Chris Curtis caught fire in the final seven minutes for Chadron State, scoring five straight points to cut the lead to 54-53 with 5:28 left. His 3-pointer with 2:39 left put the Eagles up 61-60. He also hit two free throws with 57 seconds left and his fastbreak dunk put CSC ahead 65-62 with 11.8 to go.

The Roadrunners had opportunities in the final minute. After Curtis' two free throws, Metro State had two shot attempts before Moala Tautuaa corralled the rebound with 18 seconds left. The Roadrunners had Tautuaa wrapped up in a hug for a foul to stop the clock, but no foul was called and he threw to a wide-open Curtis on the other end of the floor for a dunk.

Demetrius Miller (Flint, Mich./Flint Central H.S.) was fouled on a 3-point attempt just before the buzzer sounded. The referees put 1.0 second back on the clock and Miller made his first two attempts, but missed the third and Curtis grabbed the rebound in the right corner as time expired.

Curtis led all scorers with 24 points off the bench, shooting 9-of-14, including three 3-pointers. He also had nine rebounds for the Eagles.

Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.) led Metro State with 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Jonathan Morse (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) added 16 points and 10 rebounds and Miller had 12. Reggie Evans (Aurora, Colo./Rangeview H.S.) was held to nine points on 4-of-14 shooting and Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) added seven.

Metro State shot just 35.7 percent in the first half and allowed the Eagles to hit 52 percent to trail 30-26 at halftime after a 3-pointer by Jefferson at the buzzer. He led all scorers with 11 points in the first half.

For the game, the Roadrunners shot 41.1 percent, but CSC made 55.3 percent and outrebounded Metro 32-29.

Metro State will host Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday at 7 p.m. for its homecoming game.
