Box Score DENVER - Colorado Mesa shocked No. 12 Metro State for the second time this season, winning 67-63 in overtime at the Auraria Event Center in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Shootout quarterfinals on Tuesday night. The Roadrunners fell to 22-6 this season, while the Mavericks improved to 15-12.
Metro State shot a school-record-low 29.8 percent from the floor in the game.
Freshman Mike Melillo was on fire for CMU all night, hitting 8-of-10 from the floor and pulling down eight rebounds, scoring 21 points. His steal and layup with 45.5 seconds left gave the Mavericks a 64-63 lead.
For Metro State,
Reggie Evans (Aurora, Colo./Rangeview H.S.) shot just 8-of-27 from the floor, scoring 16 points with 13 rebounds.
Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.) had 13 points and
Demetrius Miller (Flint, Mich./Flint Central H.S.) added 12.
Paul Brotherson (Sydney, Australia/Westfields Sports High) chipped in with nine points and 10 rebounds off the bench.
Jonathan Morse (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) was limited to 1-of-7 shooting and had five points and 11 rebounds.
In an odd statistical game, the Roadrunners forced 25 turnovers, while committing just 14, and had 39 more shot attempts than the Mavericks, enjoying a 49-42 rebounding margin. But CMU shot 51.1 percent from the floor and held Metro to just 29.8 percent shooting, including 1-of-16 from the outside.
Metro had a rough first half shooting just 31.6 percent, while allowing CMU to connect at a 54.5 percent rate, but went into halftime tied 33-33. The Roadrunners forced 12 turnovers, helping overcome four 3-pointers in six attempts by the Mavericks. Despite the offensive struggles, Metro never trailed by more than two points in the first half.
Neither team led by more than four points the entire second half.
The Mavericks held a 56-52 lead with 3:24 left in the second half after a layup by Jeff Hart. Evans came back with a jumper in the paint, drawing the foul. He missed the free throw, but scored after Morse grabbed the offensive rebound, finishing a four-point possession to tie the game.
Kay hit a 10-foot jumper from the left baseline with 25.9 seconds left to put the Roadrunners up 60-58 for their first lead since 11:54 of the second half. But Colton Burgon knocked over Morse in the lane and scored a layup with 6.2 seconds to go to tie the game. An off-balanced, last-second shot at the buzzer by Evans missed to send the game to overtime.
Jefferson scored a 3-point play, making a layup and drawing a foul on the first possession to put Metro in front 63-60.
Burgon scored with 2:21 left to cut the lead to one. He had a chance to tie the game with a free throw on the play, but missed his third consecutive attempt stretching back to the second half.
The game remained a 63-62 lead for Metro with less than a minute to go, until Melillo stole a pass near midcourt and went in for a wide-open layup with 45.5 seconds left.
After another missed shot by the Roadrunners, Daniel Estes hit 1-of-2 at the line for a 65-63 Mavericks lead with 25.5 to go.
This time a turnover cost Metro a possession and Jeff Hart made two free throws with 9.3 left to seal the win.
Metro State missed its final seven shots in overtime.
The Roadrunners will find out their opponent for the NCAA Tournament on Sunday.
