Box Score PHOENIX - No. 13 Metro State opened the 2012 season with a 25-18, 25-15, 25-22 sweep over Cal Poly Pomona on Friday at the Grand Canyon Invitational.
Alysa Heath (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) put down 14 kills for the Roadrunners and hit .433 (14-1-30).
Amy Wong (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium H.S.) added nine kills and
Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) had seven.
Alex Green (Peoria, Ariz./Cactus H.S.) led the defense with 11 digs and
Audri Marrs (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) had three blocks, helping hold CPP to a .069 hitting percentage.
Metro hit .290 as a team, aided by 16 assists from
Vanessa Gemignani (Colorado Springs/Doherty H.S.) and eight from
Betty Van Lith (Eagle, Idaho/Eagle H.S.).
The Roadrunners trailed 12-11 in the first set before scoring 14 of the final 20 points, hitting .375.
Defensively, Metro held CPP to -.167 hitting percentage in the second.
Metro jumped out to an 11-6 lead in the third set.
MSU will face No. 3 Cal State Bernardino at 4:30 p.m. (PDT).
