Men's basketball: Big second half pulls Metro State away for win at Mines

Box Score GOLDEN, Colo. - No. 2 Metro State used a big second half to win 77-61 at Colorado Mines on Saturday night in Golden, Colo. The Roadrunners improved to 13-0 overall (9-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) for the third time in school. CSM fell to 8-5 and 5-4.
 
The Roadrunners shot 56.7 percent in the second half, while holding the Orediggers to just 33.3 percent, stretching a five-point halftime lead to as many as 22 in the second half.
 
Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.) and Demetrius Miller (Flint, Mich./Flint Central H.S.) each scored a game-high 20 points for MSU and Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) added 18. Jefferson shot 9-of-15 from the floor and had three assists. Miller was 9-of-13 and Kay was 6-of-9, including 4-of-4 from the outside. He also had a game-high seven rebounds.
 
Mitch McCarron (Brisbane, Australia/Genesis Christian College) added nine points and Jonathan Morse (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) had six points and six rebounds.
 
For the game, MSU shot a season-high 58.1 percent, including 9-of-12 (.750) from the outside.
 
The Orediggers stayed in the game by getting to the line 32 times, compared to just eight for the Roadrunners.
 
Both teams battled through a physical first half and the scoreboard showed that as neither team led by more than five points. MSU broke a 30-30 tie with a jumper by McCarron and a 3-pointer by Jefferson to close the half on a 5-0 run and lead 38-33 at the break. The Roadrunners made 7-of-8 (.875) in the second half.
 
A 14-4 run in the middle of the second half stretched the Metro State lead to 66-47 with 8:35 left and the Roadrunners cruised through the final minutes, holding a 15-plus-point lead the rest of the way.
 
Metro State will host No. 18 Adams State at 7 p.m. on Friday.
