Box Score DENVER - No. 2 Metro State shot 71 percent from the field in the second half to help overcome its first halftime deficit en route to a 88-71 victory over No. 13 Adams State on Friday night. The win increased the Roadrunners' record to 14-0 on the season and 10-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The loss dropped Adams State to 11-2 overall and 9-1 in RMAC play.
Metro State was led by a balanced scoring effort with
Mitch McCarron (Brisbane, Australia/Genesis Christian College) leading the way with 20 points.
Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.) and
Demetrius Miller (Flint, Mich./Flint Central H.S.) also added 17 points each.
Jonathan Morse (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) also scored in double figures as he added 16 points.
Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) also chipped in nine for the Roadrunners. McCarron had a career-high 16 rebounds for the game which was his third career double-double.
The game started off poorly for the Roadrunners as the Grizzlies led 12-2 less than four minutes in. Metro State answered by going on a 8-0 run to bring the score to 12-10 in favor of the Grizzlies. Neither team was able to pull away from the other as the lead was never more than five for either team for the rest of the first half.
Adams State went on a 8-1 run to end the first half as Metro State faced its first deficit of the season at half. The score at halftime was 39-36 in favor of Adams State.
In the first half, Metro State was not shooting very well as it shot 38 percent from the field including going 0-for-5 from behind the arc. However on a positive note, McCarron had 10 rebounds in the first half, despite picking up two offensive fouls in the first two-and-a-half minutes.
DeShawn Phenix (Fort Worth, Texas/North Crowley H.S.) added seven points off the bench for the Roadrunners before halftime.
In the second half, the game stayed tight as both teams were tied at 47 points at the 12:28 point in the second half. Then at the 11:29 mark, Adams State had a technical foul called on them for a player not checking into the game. From that point on, the Roadrunners went on a 12-0 run after making both of the free throws.
The lead stayed around 15 points after the Roadrunners pushed the lead to 67-52 at the 7:40 mark of the second half. The Roadrunners never led by less than 11 points for throughout the rest of the game en route to a 88-71 victory.
Overall for the game, Metro State shot 52 percent from the field while holding Adams State to 37 percent. Metro State out rebounded Adams State 44-32 for the game and held an 11-3 advantage in steals.
Metro State will be back in action of Saturday night when they host No. 17 Fort Lewis at 7 p.m.
