Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - No. 1 Metro State outscored Colorado Mesa 19-4 over the final eight minutes to overcome a three-point deficit as the visiting Roadrunners won 64-52 on Friday night. MSU improved to 16-0 overall and 12-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, with the 16-0 start marking the best opening to a season in school history. CMU fell to 12-4 and 9-3.
Metro State started the 2004-05 season 15-0 before suffering a loss on Jan. 22 to Colorado Mines. The 16-game winning streak is also the third-longest winning streak in school history.
The Roadrunners trailed 48-45 with eight minutes left, but
Demetrius Miller (Flint, Mich./Flint Central H.S.) tied the game with a 3-pointer with 7:55 left and it was all Roadrunners after that, sparking an 8-0 run. Miller finished with a game-high 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting.
Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.) and
Jonathan Morse (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) each had 12 points as MSU was held to a season-low 64 points in the win. Morse tied
Mitch McCarron (Brisbane, Australia/Genesis Christian College) for a team-high nine rebounds. McCarron and
Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) each had six points.
The Roadrunners led by as many as 16 points in the first half and held a double-digit lead over the final eight minute, taking a 34-21 lead into halftime.
MSU led 38-27 with 17 minutes to go when the Mavericks rallied to tie the game 42-42 with 11:51 left, capping a 15-4 run with a 3-pointer. Mike Melillo's 3-pointer with 8:43 left in the game gave CMU its only lead of the second half at 48-45 before the Roadrunners closed the game.
Melillo led the Mavericks with 18 points and 12 rebounds, but did not score after his go-ahead 3-pointer with 8:43 remaining.
Metro State shot 43.1 percent in the game and committed just seven turnovers, while outrebounding the Mavericks 37-32.
MSU had lost four of its previous five games to Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction entering Friday.
The Roadrunners look to keep the winning streak alive on Saturday at Western State Colorado.
