Men's basketball: Jefferson and McCarron lead MSU to 10-0 start

Box Score DEVNER - No. 2 Metro State defeated New Mexico Highlands 92-71 on Friday night at the Auraria Event Center.  The win increased the Roadrunners' record to 10-0 overall and 6-0 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.  The loss dropped the Cowboys to 4-7 overall and 2-5 in RMAC play. 
 
Metro State was led by Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.)'s 21 points.  Four other Roadrunners scored in double figures including 16 from Mitch McCarron (Brisbane, Australia/Genesis Christian College), 14 by Demetrius Miller (Flint, Mich./Flint Central H.S.) and both Jonathan Morse (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) and Jamal McClerkin (Van Nuys, Calif./Chaminade College Prep) chipped in 12.  Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) added eight points and DeShawn Phenix (Fort Worth, Texas/North Crowley H.S.) chipped in seven off the bench.
 
McCarron's career high 14 rebounds were a game high that helped give the Roadrunners a 41-35 rebounding advantage and he added a game-high four assists.  McClerkin's 12 points were also a career high. Jefferson buried 4-of-6 from the outside.
 
The game started off fairly even as neither team was able to pull away from the other in the first half.  Metro State was able to go on a 12-3 run in the middle of the first half. However, New Mexico Highlands answered with a 15-6 run of their own to bring the game back to a two point game. MSU held a 43-38 lead at halftime.
 
In the second half Metro State was finally able to pull away from NMHU as it outscored the Cowboys 49-33.  The Roadrunners were able to capitalize on their opportunities at the free throw line as they made 18-of-22 (.818) from the charity stripe in the second half to help the Roadrunners to a 92-71 victory at home.
 
New Mexico Highlands was led by Mannie Cass' 13 points.
 
Overall for the game the Roadrunners shot 45.3 percent including 37.5 percent from behind the arc.  The Roadrunners also shot 77.8 percent from the free throw line.
 
Metro State will be back in action on Saturday night at 7 p.m. when it hosts Western New Mexico.
