Box Score DENVER- Jack Mayfield (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) scored his first career goal as No. 24 Metro State defeats Colorado Mesa 1-0 on Friday afternoon. The win increased the Roadrunners' record to 5-1-3 overall and 3-0-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The loss dropped the Mavericks' record to 4-4-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the RMAC.
Despite controlling the pace of the game early, Metro State was unable to score a goal until Mayfield scored the go-ahead goal in the 32nd minute. Mayfield scored off
Jeff Gillis (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill H.S.)' shot that was saved by the Mavericks' goalie and bounced right to him inside the box.
Throughout the rest of the half, Metro State controlled the flow of the game and outshot Colorado Mesa 8-3 in the half.
In the second half, things started to get a little chippy as both teams earned a yellow card in the 53rd minute within 40 seconds of each other.
Things started to settle back down after each team had been given a caution until towards the end of the game when several fouls started to pile up for each team.
Despite the increased aggression on both sides, Metro State was able to maintain its composure as it finished out the game to earn the victory and maintain its lead atop the RMAC standings as the only team without a loss in conference play.
Overall for the game, the Roadrunners outshot the Mavericks 12-9 and tied with four shots on goal by each side.
Keegan Hand (Loveland, Colo./Thompson Valley H.S.) earned the victory for the Roadrunners in goal and increased his record to 3-0-2 overall. Hand had four saves on the day.
Metro State will be back in action on Sunday when it travels to Golden to take on Colorado School of Mines at 2 p.m.
