Women's basketball: Nelson's 21 not enough in overtime loss at UCSD

Box Score SAN DIEGO - UC San Diego rallied from down by three points with under two minutes left in regulation to earn a 62-61 win in overtime over Metro State on Friday night in San Diego. The Roadrunners fell to 1-2 overall, while the Tritons improved to 3-1.

Metro State led 51-48 after two free throws by Amy Nelson (Richmond, Utah/Sky View H.S.) with 1:50 remaining in the second half. UCSD hit four free throws over the next 1:24 to take a 52-51 lead with 26 seconds to go. Nelson then made a layup and drew the foul, converting a 3-point play with 11 seconds left for a 54-52 lead. But the Roadrunners fouled with six seconds left and UCSD's Erin Dautremont converted two free throws to send the game to overtime.

UC San Diego opened overtime with five straight points to lead 59-54 and the Roadrunners could not recover.

Trailing 62-56 with 1:32 left, Metro State got back-to-back scores from Nelson and Kya DeGarmo (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado H.S.) to trim its deficit to 62-60 with 56 seconds remaining. A steal by Tai Jensen (Troy, Idaho/Troy H.S.) set up the final possession for the Roadrunners. Nelson had two scoring opportunities before Jensen came up with the rebound with three seconds left and was fouled. However, she was only able to make 1-of-2. Nelson pulled down the rebound off the miss of the second attempt, but was unable to get off a shot before the buzzer as the Tritons held on.

Nelson scored 21 points to lead the Roadrunners and had seven rebounds. Jensen had nine points and 11 rebounds and DeGarmo chipped in with eight points.

Metro State shot just 34.5 percent, but held a 41-to-36 rebounding margin.

Dautremont led all scorers with 26 points.

The Roadrunners will wrap up non-conference play on Saturday against Cal State San Bernardino.
