Box Score DENVER - No. 1 Metro State remained undefeated as it topped Colorado Mines 74-58 on Sunday in the conclusion of Friday's game that was suspended due to a broken backboard. The win improved Metro State to 21-0 overall and 17-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The loss dropped Colorado Mines to 11-9 overall and 8-8 in RMAC play.
Metro State was led by 18 points from both
Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.) and
Mitch McCarron (Brisbane, Australia/Genesis Christian College). Also scoring in double figures for the Roadrunners was
Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) with 16 points and 12 points from
Demetrius Miller (Flint, Mich./Flint Central H.S.).
Jonathan Morse (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) also grabbed six rebounds which puts him tied for first all-time in Metro State history with 915 for his career. He is tied for the career record with Shun Tillman (1986-90).
The game which started on Friday night, was suspended at the 6:44 mark when a dunk by Mines shattered the backboard forcing the game to be suspended to Sunday so the backboard could be replaced. At the 6:44 mark of the first half, Metro State held a 21-16 lead.
On Sunday when the game resumed, Metro State came out with aggression as McCarron threw down a forceful alley-oop dunk from Jefferson on the first play. Metro State used aggressive defense for the rest of the half as it forced five turnovers, four of which were steals as the Roadrunners closed out the half on a 16-7 run.
In the first half, Metro State shot 61 percent from the field and 63 percent from behind the arc in route to a 37-23 halftime advantage. Metro State forced 13 turnovers, seven of which were steals to help the Roadrunners to their halftime advantage.
In the second half, Metro State was able to maintain around a double-digit lead until the 7:11 mark when Colorado Mines went on an 8-2 run to cut the lead to four at the 4:37 mark. Metro State responded by going on a 15-4 run to close out the game at 74-58.
Overall for the game, Metro State shot 57 percent (29-of-51 shooting) and 50 percent from behind the arc (7-for-14). Metro State also forced 21 turnovers from Colorado Mines.
Colorado Mines was led by Luke Meisch with 21 points and 11 rebounds.
Metro state will be back in action on Saturday when they travel across town to Regis at 3 p.m.
