Box Score DURANGO, Colo. - No. 1 Metro State's bid for an undefeated season came to an end on Friday on the road as No. 17 Fort Lewis upset the Roadrunners 61-54 in Durango, Colo. MSU fell to 22-1 overall and 18-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while FLC improved to 18-4 and 15-4.
Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.) led the Roadrunners, who shot a season-worst 35.8 percent, with 15 points on just 5-of-15 shooting.
Demetrius Miller (Flint, Mich./Flint Central H.S.) scored 11 points.
Fort Lewis came out hot from the start, shooting 9-of-13 (.692) over the first 11 minutes of the game, including five 3-pointers. At the same time, Metro State shot just 4-of-14 (.286) during the first 11 minutes. An 11-2 run gave FLC a 23-14 lead with 9:13 left in the first half after Marcus Ayala's second consecutive 3-pointer.
The Roadrunners responded with a 16-3 run of their own, including 10 straight points at one point, taking a 30-26 lead with 4:28 left in the half on a jumper by Jefferson. They went into halftime with a 32-28 advantage. Jefferson led all scorers with 10 points and had two assists. The Skyhawks cooled to 52.6 percent shooting, while the Roadrunners shot 41.9 percent, holding their halftime lead thanks to a 2-to-8 turnover advantage.
In the second half, Metro State built a 43-34 lead with 10:43 left on a 3-pointer by Miller. The Skyhawks responded with an 11-0 run to take a 45-43 lead with 6:30 to go.
Jamal McClerkin (Van Nuys, Calif./Chaminade College Prep) tied the game with his first basket of the game on MSU's next possession and then Jefferson was fouled on a 3-pointer with the shot clock expiring. He hit all three free throws to give the Roadrunners a 48-45 lead with 4:24 remaining in the game, but it was all FLC after that.
The Skyhawks took the lead right back with eight straight points to lead 53-48 with 1:33 left.
Miller was fouled on a drive to the basket with 1:24 to go and hit both free throws, trimming the deficit to 53-50.
After a defensive stop, Miller was again fouled on a baseline drive and he made both free throws. But a foul before the inbounds against Miller put Marcus Ayala at the line for two FLC free throws. Ayala hit both as the Skyhawks built their lead back to three.
Metro State turned it over on its ensuing possession, stepping on the sideline with 44.3 seconds left and Ayala sunk another layup with 26 seconds left. After a defensive stop by the Skyhawks, Ayala went back to the line with 20 seconds left and made both free throws, giving FLC a 59-52 lead.
Following a layup by Jefferson, Ayala iced the game with two more free throws with 10.8 seconds to go.
Ayala finished with a game-high 25 points on 7-of-14 shooting and he hit 8-of-8 at the line, including six in the final 1:03.
Metro State was whistled for 23 fouls as starters
Mitch McCarron (Brisbane, Australia/Genesis Christian College) and
Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) both fouled out midway through the second half.
Metro State will play at Adams State at 8 p.m. on Saturday.
