Men's basketball: Morse's double-double gets MSU back on the winning side

Box Score ALAMOSA, Colo. - No. 1 Metro State recovered from its first loss of the season, earning a 69-56 victory at Adams State on Saturday night in Alamosa, Colo. The Roadrunners improved to 23-1 overall and 19-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while ASU fell to 17-7 and 14-6. MSU lost 61-54 at No. 17 Fort Lewis on Friday.

The win clinched sole possession of the regular season RMAC championship for the Roadrunners, their first since 2009 and seventh all-time, the most of any RMAC school.

Metro State's defense forced 22 turnovers, keeping the Grizzlies out of rhythm all night.

Jonathan Morse (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) spoiled ASU's senior night, scoring 20 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, helping the Roadrunners dominate that paint. Morse shot 8-of-10 from the floor and 4-of-5 at the line, helping MSU outscore ASU 34-18 in the paint. Demetrius Miller (Flint, Mich./Flint Central H.S.) buried all three of his 3-point attempts and had 16 points, while Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) stepped up with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Mitch McCarron (Brisbane, Australia/Genesis Christian College) chipped in with nine.

Metro State put together one of its best first halves of the season, forcing 14 turnovers and outshooting ASU 48.3 percent to 31.3 percent. The disciplined Roadrunners committed just four turnovers and built a 34-16 halftime lead. Morse was a force in the paint, scoring 13 points and grabbing six rebounds, helping MSU outscore the Grizzlies 20-6 in the paint. Metro State outscored ASU 12-3 over the final 4:30 of the first half.

MSU jumped out to a 21-point lead on its first possession of the second half. An 8-2 run trimmed the Roadrunners lead to 49-37 with 8:03 after a pair of 3-pointers for the Grizzlies. A 3-pointer by Kay stopped the run and brought the Roadrunners back to a seemingly comfortable 15-point lead.

But Adams State still did not go away and a 28-foot 3-pointer by Justin Kauffman cut the lead to 10 points at 52-42 with seven minutes to play.

The Grizzlies trimmed the lead to nine points with four minutes left, but Miller drilled a 3-pointer from the left corner on MSU's next possession, putting Metro State back in front 60-48.

ASU's 3-point shooting again cut the lead to nine points at 62-53 with 3:16 to play.

A layup by Morse put MSU ahead 65-54 with 1:50 left and a defensive stop on the ensuing possession and sealed the victory.

The Grizzlies hit 4-of-11 from the outside in the second half and shot 39.0 percent from the floor for the game. Metro State shot 48.1 percent and hit 5-of-10 from the outside on the night.

Metro State will wrap up the regular season at home next weekend against Colorado State-Pueblo and UC-Colorado Springs.
