Box Score DENVER - No. 2 Metro State fell to Colorado State-Pueblo 70-69 on Friday night as Arden Dennis scored the game-winning layup with 2.9 seconds left. The loss dropped Metro State to 23-2 overall and 19-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The win increased CSU-Pueblo's record to 14-13 and 13-8 in RMAC play with its sixth win in the past seven games.
Friday's game was the first time this season that the Roadrunners lost on their home court.
Metro State was led by balanced scoring as five players scored in double figures.
Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.) led the way with 14 points. Also scoring in double figures was
Demetrius Miller (Flint, Mich./Flint Central H.S.) and
Jonathan Morse (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) with 11 points each.
Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) and
Mitch McCarron (Brisbane, Australia/Genesis Christian College) also added 10 points each.
The first half started out slow as Metro State held a 12-9 advantage at the media time-out at the 9:57 mark. However, both teams turned up their offensive efficiency as the score at halftime was 34-32 in favor of the ThunderWolves.
Overall for the first half, Metro State shot 38.5 percent from the field on 10-of-26 shooting including going 1-for-6 from behind the arc. CSU-Pueblo shot 50 percent on 12-of-24 shooting including 5-for-11 from 3-point range.
In the second half, Metro State came out slowly as it was unable to take the lead until 16:09 mark when it led 44-43 on a three point basket from McCarron. McCarron's basket came at the beginning of a 9-2 run for the Roadrunners. However, the Thunderwolves responded with a 17-4 run to take the lead 62-53 with 7:22 left.
Over the next six minutes Metro State used a 15-6 run to tie the game at 68 a piece with 1:23 left. Then with 19 seconds left, McCarron hit 1-of-2 free throws to pull ahead 69-68. Dennis scored the final basket of the game as he drove into the lane and made his lay-up with 2.9 seconds left. McCarron's full court shot as time expired missed the mark as Metro State fell to CSU-Pueblo 70-69.
The Thunderwolves were led by 18 from Dennis and 16 from Jed Knafelc, who buried 4-of-6 from the outside.
Metro State will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts UC-Colorado Springs for Senior Night at 7 p.m.
