DENVER - No. 2 Metro State used an 18-2 run over three minutes and 10 seconds starting at the 12:18 mark of the second half to pull ahead for a 98-80 win on Saturday night against UC-Colorado Springs to wrap up the regular season. The win increased the Roadrunners' record to 24-2 overall on the season and 20-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The loss dropped the Mountain Lions to 5-21 overall and 5-17 in RMAC play.
The 98 points were a season high for MSU Denver.
Metro State was led by a career-high 29 points from senior
Jonathan Morse (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) on Senior Night. Also scoring in double figures was
Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) with 17 points and
Demetrius Miller (Flint, Mich./Flint Central H.S.) with 14 points.
Derrick January (Long Beach, Calif./Dominguez H.S.) and
Mitch McCarron (Brisbane, Australia/Genesis Christian College) each had nine. Freshman
Jourdon Hunter (Denver, Colo./Kennedy H.S.) scored seven off the bench.
Both Kay and Morse had double figure rebounds for the Roadrunners with Kay grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds and 11 from Morse. The 29 points and 11 rebounds game Morse his 31st double-double of his career (9th this season) which puts him 3rd all time in Metro State History. Kay also recorded his second double-double of the season and fourth of his career.
In the first half, Metro State started off slow as UCCS was able to take the lead and led for the rest of the first half after the 16:56 mark when it went ahead 8-7. UCCS was able to push the lead to seven points (34-27) as their largest margin at the 8:51 mark. Metro State was able to fight back as it cut the halftime deficit to one point (48-47).
At halftime, Metro State shot 48.5 percent on 16-of-33 shooting from the field including 3-for-8 from behind the arc. UCCS shot 55.9 percent from the field on 19-of-34 shooting.
In the second half, Metro State used an 18-2 from the 12:18 mark to the 9:08 mark to take control of the game with an 83-66 lead. The run started with four straight 3-pointers by the Roadrunners, including two from Miller.
Metro State continued to control the game from that point as it never led by less than 12 points for the including having its largest lead of the game of 22 (98-78) at the 1:19 mark.
Overall for the game, Metro State shot 55.4 percent on 36-of-65 shooting including 7-for-16 from behind the arc. The Roadrunners also shot 79.2 from the free throw line (19-of-24). The Roadrunners outrebounded the Mountain Lions 38-to-26 for the game and won the turnover battle 8-to-11.
The Mountain Lions were led by 21 points from Derrick White.
Metro State will be back in action on Tuesday night for the first round of the RMAC Shootout at 7 p.m.
