Men's basketball: Metro State throttles CMU to advance to championship

Box Score DENVER - No. 4 Metro State never trailed as it defeated Colorado Mesa 93-64 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Semifinal.  The win increased the Roadrunners' record to 26-2.  The loss dropped the Mavericks' record to 18-10 on the season.

Metro State was led by 21 points from Jonathan Morse (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) which gave him his third straight game with at least 20 points.  Also scoring in double figures was Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.) with 19 points, Mitch McCarron (Brisbane, Australia/Genesis Christian College) with 17 and Demetrius Miller (Flint, Mich./Flint Central H.S.) with 12 points. 

In the first half, Metro State came out of the gate strong as it led 15-4 at the 15:49 mark.  The Roadrunners were then able to push the lead to 20 as they went on a 12-2 run over the next 4:03 to lead 29-9.

Colorado Mesa answered by going on a 9-2 run to cut the lead to 31-18 at the 7:13 mark of the first half.  Metro State was able to answer to push the lead back to 20 points as it closed the half out at 47-27.

Overall for the first half, Metro State shot 55.6 percent on 15-of-27 shooting including 4-for-7 from behind the arc.  The Roadrunners also shot 92.9 percent from the charity stripe on 13-of-14 shooting.  The Roadrunners held a 20-12 rebounding advantage at the half.

In the second half, Metro State was able to continue its strong performance as it pushed the lead to 30 points at the 10:25 mark of the half.  The Roadrunners continued their strong performance throughout the rest of the second half as the bench was able to maintain the lead around 30 points after giving the starters an early rest with the big lead. 

Overall for the game, Metro State shot 56.6 percent on 30-of-53 shooting including 7-for-13 (53.8 percent) from three point range.  The Roadrunners also shot a season high 89.7 percent from the free throw line on 26-of-29 shooting.

The Roadrunners outrebounded the Mavericks 34-28 for the game.  It was also the 27th game this year that the Roadrunners won the turnover margin battle (the only other time they tied their opponent).

Colorado Mesa was led by 15 from both Jeff Hart and Colton Burgon.

Metro State will be back in action on Saturday night for the RMAC tournament final at 7 p.m. against No. 22 Fort Lewis.  Colorado Mesa will have to wait to see if they will be accepted to the regional tournament next weekend.
