LAKEWOOD, Colo. - Danny Arrubla (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton H.S.) scored twice as Metro State rallied from an early deficit to win 5-1 at Colorado Christian on Wednesday night at Trailblazer Stadium in Lakewood, Colo. The Roadrunners improved to 4-1-2 overall and 2-0-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CCU fell to 1-6-0 and 0-3-0.
The Roadrunners came out sluggish early and it cost them a goal when Luke Burgard scored from 25 yards out just five minutes into the game.
But MSU Denver rallied for three goals over a 20-minute span in the first half. Makir Oropeza (Denver, Colo./C.E.C. Middle College) evened the score with his first career goal after forcing a turnover deep in CCU's half of the field and shot into the upper corner of the net at 9:59.
Arrubla then scored the go-ahead goal at 28:23, taking a pass on the right wing and firing a low shot. Just 1:27 later, Pierce Galan (Phoenix/Seton Catholic H.S.) floated a crossing pass from the left corner of the field and it sailed over the goalkeeper's head for a goal, brushing the far post.
Metro State dominated the second half, outshooting the Cougars 14-2, but didn't find the net until 76:00 when Arrubla finished a short cross from Galan for a 4-1 lead.
Redshirt freshman Roe Shrestha (Boulder, Colo./Boulder H.S.) scored his first career goal at 87:44. He was wide open from the top of the box and shot into the upper corner of the net.
James Tanner (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens H.S.) played all 90 minutes in goal and made two saves.
Metro State outshot CCU 23-5 and had a 12-1 advantage on corner kicks.
The Roadrunners are off until Sunday when they host Colorado State-Pueblo at 2:30 p.m. at Auraria Field
