Box Score ALAMOSA, Colo. - Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) scored 15 of his game-high 21 points in the second half as No. 4 Metro State earned an 88-77 win at Adams State on Friday. The Roadrunners improved to 13-1 overall and 7-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while ASU fell to 7-6 and 4-6.
Kay hit two 3-pointers and shot 6-of-11 from the floor and 7-of-8 at the free throw line, while pulling down 10 rebounds for his seventh career double-double.
Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.) was nearly perfect, shooting 4-of-5 from the floor and 8-of-8 at the free throw line to score 18 points. He extended his consecutive free throws made streak to a school-record 27.
Mitch McCarron (Brisbane, Australia/Genesis Christian College) added 12 points and five assists, while
Raul Delgado (Chihuahua, Mexico/Springville (Utah) H.S.) (11 points) and
Jamal McClerkin (Van Nuys, Calif./Chaminade College Prep) (10) joined him in scoring double figures.
Will Sinclair (Lilydale, Australia/Lilydale Heights College) just missed that mark with nine points and eight rebounds.
The Roadrunners shot 54.1 percent to help make up for a season-high 19 turnovers forced by 12 ASU steals. Metro State outrebounded the Grizzlies 35-to-30. MSU, the top free throw-shooting team in the RMAC, made 28-of-32 (.875) at the line.
Metro State built a 20-point lead late in the first half, but ASU scored the final six points in the half, including a 3-pointer from just inside halfcourt, to give the Roadrunners a 50-38 lead at the break.
The Grizzlies carried that momentum into the second half, extending their run to 14-1 through halftime and cutting Metro State's lead to just five points early in the second half.
Kay responded for the Roadrunners with back-to-back 3-pointers and 10 straight points for MSU. The lead was quickly stretched back to 16 on a jumper by Delgado with 10:33 remaining.
ASU fought back late, cutting the lead to seven with under four minutes remaining, but Metro State held the Grizzlies without a point in the final two minutes and Kay and Jefferson combined to hit 4-of-4 at the line during that time to seal the win.
Metro State will play at Fort Lewis at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. The Skyhawks handed the Roadrunners their first loss of the season in Durango, Colo., a year ago, ending a 22-0 start to the season.
