Box Score DURANGO, Colo. - Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.) scored 31 points as No. 4 Metro State rallied from a second-half deficit to win 78-65 at Fort Lewis on Saturday night in Durango, Colo. The Roadrunners improved to 14-1 overall and 11-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while FLC fell to 11-4 and 8-3 in the RMAC.
Jefferson, the reigning RMAC offensive player of the week and RMAC preseason player of the year, buried 10-of-15 from the floor, including 4-of-5 3-point field goals. He also made all seven of his free throw attempts, stretching his school record to 34 consecutive free throws made. Jefferson added six rebounds, a game-high five assists and three steals. It was Jefferson's third game in the past four with 30+ points.
Jamal McClerkin (Van Nuys, Calif./Chaminade College Prep) scored a career-high 15 points, hitting a career-high three 3-pointers.
Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) recorded his second straight double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Mitch McCarron (Brisbane, Australia/Genesis Christian College) had seven points and six rebounds before fouling out in the second half.
A tough Metro State defense held the Skyhawks to just 35.2 percent shooting with a +6 (41-to-35) rebounding margin. The Roadrunners also won the turnover battle 11-to-14.
The Roadrunners fell behind 5-0 early in the game, but it was back-and-forth the rest of the half. FLC took a 41-38 lead into halftime.
FLC led 44-41 with 15:21 left in the game, but the Roadrunners responded with a 17-4 run over the next eight minutes, capped by back-to-back 3-pointers from Kay and Jefferson. The pair of 3-pointers put Metro State up 58-48 with 7:38 remaining.
The Roadrunners pulled away over the final seven minutes, stretching their lead to 13 points.
Raul Delgado (Chihuahua, Mexico/Springville (Utah) H.S.) and McClerkin capped the evening with wide-open dunks in the final minute.
Alex Herrera and Mike Matthews each had 17 points to lead Fort Lewis.
After starting last season 22-0 a year ago, the Roadrunners suffered their first loss of the season in Durango to the Skyhawks. This season Metro State survived its trip to Fort Lewis with a perfect record in RMAC play.
Metro State will host Colorado Mesa at 7 p.m. on Friday.
