GOLDEN, Colo. - Metropolitan State University of Denver dug itself a four-goal deficit just 22 minutes into the game and a comeback came up short in a 7-3 loss at Colorado School of Mines on Sunday. The Roadrunners fell to 9-4-0 overall and 6-4-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CSM moved ahead of the Roadrunners into third place in the RMAC at 9-5-0 and 7-3-0.
The Orediggers, led by two of Matthew Alemann's three goals, scored four goals in the first 21:23 of the game.
Dustin Berg (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) started the comeback at 31:28, scoring on a 25-yard shot through traffic.
Josh Belfrage (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista H.S.) opened scoring just 21 seconds into the second half, trimming the deficit to 4-2. He took over the ball in front of the net after a failed clearing attempt by the Orediggers defense.
After a hand ball was called in the box, Berg calmly converted a penalty kick at 74:27 to cut the deficit to one at 4-3.
But the Orediggers piled on three goals in the final nine minutes to reach the final score of 7-3.
James Tanner (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens H.S.) made seven saves for the Roadrunners, who were outshot 23-to-20.
MSU Denver will host Colorado State-Pueblo at 4:30.
