MARSHALL, Minn. - Deni Jacobs (Plains, Kan./Southwestern Heights H.S.) scored all of her game-high 18 points in the second half to lead Metropolitan State University of Denver to a 67-60 win at Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday afternoon in the first regular-season game for both teams.
Jacobs was on the bench with three fouls for all but three minutes of the first half, but responded with by hitting 8-of-11 from the floor and grabbing six of her eight rebounds after the break.
Freshmen
Georgia Ohrdorf (Wollongong, Australia/St. Mary Star of the Sea College) (12 points) and
Emily Hartegan (Frisco, Texas/Wylie East H.S.) (10 points) joined Jacobs in double figures in scoring. Ohrdorf finished 6-of-10 from the floor, making all five of her shots in the second half. She also had five rebounds. Hartegan shot 4-of-8 from the floor, scoring all of her points in the first half.
Jenae Paine (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City H.S.) scored nine points and
Brittany Curl (Absarokee, Mont./Absarokee H.S.) provided seven.
The Roadrunners outrebounded SMSU 41-to-33 and committed just 13 turnovers, while shooting 43 percent in the game.
MSU Denver held a 26-24 lead at halftime, despite shooting just 30 percent.
Erin McClarie (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Rock Canyon H.S.) scored a layup with 15:32 remaining in the game for a 36-35 lead and MSU Denver never trailed again. Paine made two free throws with 12 seconds left to seal the win.
The Mustangs were led by Hope Bonlander's 15 points.
The Roadrunners will play at Minnesota State, Mankato on Sunday at 4 p.m. (CT).
