DENVER - No. 3 Metropolitan State University of Denver shot 56.3 percent to earn a 79-52 win over South Dakota School of Mines on Friday night at the Auraria Event Center. The Roadrunners improved to 3-0 overall this season, while SDSMT dropped to 0-4.
Mitch McCarron (Brisbane, Australia/Genesis Christian College) had a game-high 24 points and six assists, shooting 7-of-11 from the floor and 8-of-10 from the free throw line.
Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) scored 18 points and shot 5-of-6 from the floor and 8-of-9 at the line.
Jourdon Hunter (Denver, Colo./Kennedy H.S.) buried 4-of-5 from 3-point range and scored 14 points.
Dalante Dunklin (San Diego, Calif./Francis W. Parker H.S.) had eight points and four assists in his first career start.
MSU Denver forced 18 turnovers and held the Hardrockers to just 41 percent shooting.
McCarron had 13 points and Kay had 12 at halftime as the Roadrunners led SDSMT 43-24 at the break. MSU Denver jumped out to a 12-1 lead to start the game and shot 62.5 percent from the floor in the first half.
The Roadrunners forced nine second-half turnovers and led by as many as 32 points in the second half.
MSU Denver will host Langston University at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
