Men's basketball: Metro State clinches eighth RMAC title

Box Score DENVER - No. 1 Metro State overcame a halftime deficit to earn a 90-64 win over Adams State on Saturday night and clinch sole possession of its second consecutive Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular season championship. The win also extended Metro State's winning streak to 20 games, the third-longest winning streak in school history and longest active streak in NCAA Division II, as the Roadrunners improved to 23-1 overall and 20-0 in the RMAC. ASU fell to 15-9 and 11-9 in the RMAC.

The win clinched the eighth RMAC regular season title in school history.

Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) and Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.) each scored 23 points to lead all scorers. Kay hit 9-of-10 from the floor and 5-of-5 at the free throw line while Jefferson hit 13-of-13 at the line. Mitch McCarron (Brisbane, Australia/Genesis Christian College) scored 14 points and had team highs of seven rebounds and six assists, while shooting 6-of-9 from the floor. Raul Delgado (Chihuahua, Mexico/Springville (Utah) H.S.) also provided 10 points.

Jefferson also tied Jesse Wagstaff's (2005-09) career free throws made record as the two players are knotted at 407.

The Roadrunners shot 60.4 percent for the game, the first time over 60 percent since 2009, and committed just nine turnovers.

The two teams played a physical first half, combining for 22 fouls and 27 free throws. Neither team led by more than six and the Roadrunners used a 9-0 run to overcome that deficit. Metro State went into halftime down 33-32 after ASU shot 56.5 percent. Jefferson hit 11-of-11 at the line in the first half and led all scorers with 14 points. However, the Grizzlies outrebounded MSU Denver 18-to-5 in the first half.

Metro State opened the second half on fire, hitting four of its first five shots and went on a 10-0 run, capped by a steal and two-handed dunk by Kay for a 42-33 lead. The Roadrunners extended their lead to 20 points less than 10 minutes into the second half at 60-40 with 10:35 remaining in the game.

Metro State shot 65.6 percent in the second half, outscoring ASU 58-31.

Julian Scott led the Grizzlies with 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting.

The Roadrunners will look to become the third team in RMAC history to go undefeated in conference play when they wrap up the regular season next weekend at Colorado State-Pueblo and UC-Colorado Springs.
