Men's basketball: Delgado and McCarron spark late rally to extend streak to 17

Box Score LAKEWOOD, Colo. - No. 1 Metro State survived a late scare to rally for a 66-61 win at Colorado Christian on Saturday night. The Roadrunners improved to 20-1 overall and 17-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with their 17th straight win, while CCU fell to 11-10 overall and 9-8 in the RMAC.

The Roadrunners blew a 20-point halftime lead as the Cougars led 59-56 with 2:44 to go. Raul Delgado (Chihuahua, Mexico/Springville (Utah) H.S.) tied the game with 1:05 remaining with a steal and a dunk and Mitch McCarron (Brisbane, Australia/Genesis Christian College) put Metro State back in front for good with a steal and a layup with 43 seconds to go.

Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.) led the Roadrunners with 18 points, making all 10 of his free throw attempts. McCarron scored 13 and had eight rebounds. But the team's two most consistent players all season combined to shoot just 8-of-24 with 11 turnovers, uncharacteristic for the pair. Despite their struggles, the two came through in the final, as Jefferson and McCarron scored six of the team's final seven points as Metro State outscored the Cougars 10-2 over the final 2:11.

Delgado and Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) each had nine points, but Kay fouled out with 13:32 left in the game. Delgado came through in his absence hitting 3-of-4 off the bench.

After falling behind 11-4 early in the first half, Metro State outscored CCU 37-10 over the final 14 minutes of the first half to lead 41-21 at the break. Over the final 8:43, Metro State shot 10-of-14 from the floor, including 5-of-6 from the outside. Jefferson's 3-pointer at the buzzer gave him a team-high 10 points at the break.

The Cougars hit four 3-pointers in five possessions, closing the gap to 50-43 with 9:02 left. CCU took its first lead of the second half on a 3-pointer by Andrew Squiers for a 57-56 lead with 3:55 to go.

Trailing 59-56 with 2:24 left, Metro State pulled it together. Will Sinclair (Lilydale, Australia/Lilydale Heights College) hit 1-of-2 at the line with 2:11 remaining to bring the Roadrunners within two points. After each team came up scoreless on a possession, Delgado forced a steal and led the breakaway for a slam dunk ahead of two defenders to tie the game 59-59 with 1:05 to go.

McCarron then came up with a steal at midcourt and made a layup for a 61-59 lead with 43 seconds remaining. Jefferson and Delgado combined to sink 5-of-6 at the line in the final minute to seal the win.

Squiers led CCU with 20 points and six assists. Kyle Weaver scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half, sparking the comeback.

Metro State will host Regis University for Homecoming next Saturday at 7 p.m.
