DENVER - Metro State's men's tennis team won its third straight match on Friday, topping Colorado Christian 9-0 in Lakewood, Colo., in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener for the Roadrunners. The men's team improved to 6-6 overall.
The Roadrunners lost just four games the entire day as
Nick Baker (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit West H.S.) (No. 3 singles),
Trevor Jones (Vancouver, Wash./Mountain View H.S.) (No. 4) and
Jonathan Evangelista (Brighton, Colo./Brighton Collegiate H.S.) (No. 5) all won 6-0, 6-0.
Josh Graetz (Albury, Australia/The Scots School) earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1, as did
Adrien Delvaux (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound H.S.) at No. 2.
In doubles, Graetz and Delvaux cruised to an 8-2 win at No. 1 and Baker and Jones blanked the Cougars at No. 2. CCU forfeited matches at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.
Metro State's women fell 5-4 to CCU to drop to 3-11 overall this season.
The Roadrunners have been decimated by injuries as two of its top four players in the lineup are out with injuries. That forced everyone up one spot and several players up two spots from their normal positions, while MSU Denver had to forfeit at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles.
Metro State actually won four of the seven matches that were played as
Wanda Holopainen (Lahti, Finland/Salpausselän H.S.) (No. 1 singles) and
Cristina Oropeza (Nogales, Ariz./Nogales H.S.) (No. 2 singles) each earned straight-set victories. That duo also won 8-2 at No. 1 doubles and
Kaitlyn Miller (Castle Rock, Colo./Rock Canyon H.S.) and
Whitney Vaswig (Niwot, Colo./Niwot H.S.) won 9-8 (7-3) at No. 2 doubles.
Metro State will play a non-conference match at Colorado College on Wednesday and then will host Holy Names (Calif.) and Hastings (Neb.) on Friday.
