DENVER - Metro State opened its new home tennis facility with a bang as the women's team earned a 6-3 victory over No. 46 St. Edward's (Texas) on Saturday. The men fell 7-2 to No. 24 St. Edward's. It was the first-ever dual match at The Regency Athletic Complex at MSU Denver.
For the women, it was their first win over a ranked opponent since 2010.
The women's team earned a dominating 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles from
Kaitlyn Miller (Castle Rock, Colo./Rock Canyon H.S.) and
Whitney Vaswig (Niwot, Colo./Niwot H.S.), while
Naomi Holopainen (Lahti, Finland/Salpausselän H.S.) and
Taylor Larreau (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman H.S.) edged SEU 9-8 (7-4) at No. 1 for the 2-1 lead after doubles. Holopainen and
Wanda Holopainen (Lahti, Finland/Salpausselän H.S.) each earned wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, and Vaswig and Miller clinched the match with wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
Josh Graetz (Albury, Australia/The Scots School) earned a three-set win at No. 1 singles for the men, as did
Nick Baker (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit West H.S.) at No. 3.
The Roadrunners will host Wartburg (Iowa) on Friday.
