Tennis: Metro State men fall in semifinals, will play in third-place match

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Metro State's men's tennis team earned a 5-0 win over Colorado Christian on Friday morning, but fell 5-4 at Colorado Mesa late in the evening in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament semifinals. The women's team lost 5-2 to Colorado State-Pueblo and 5-2 to Montana State-Billings to end its season. The women's team finished 4-20 this season. The men's team is now 12-11 overall after the semifinals loss to CMU. They will face Colorado State-Pueblo at noon on Saturday for third place in the RMAC.

The Roadrunners breezed to three doubles wins against CCU in the men's first-round match. Nick Baker (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit West H.S.) and Chris Anderson (El Paso, Texas/Americas H.S.) clinched the win with a pair of 6-0, 6-0 singles wins at No. 3 and No. 5.

Metro State led 2-1 after doubles against CMU, earning wins from Nick Baker (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit West H.S.) and Trevor Jones (Vancouver, Wash./Mountain View H.S.) at No. 2 and Jonathan Evangelista (Brighton, Colo./Brighton Collegiate H.S.) and Chris Anderson (El Paso, Texas/Americas H.S.) at No. 3. Josh Graetz (Albury, Australia/The Scots School) earned a 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles against 28th-ranked Jordan Lyden, bringing the Roadrunners two wins away from clinching. After Baker won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3, the Mavericks earned victories at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 before Trevor Brown knocked off MSU Denver's Trevor Jones (Vancouver, Wash./Mountain View H.S.) 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 at No. 6 to send the Mavericks into the championship on Saturday. They will face Western New Mexico.

Wanda Holopainen (Lahti, Finland/Salpausselän H.S.) and Cristina Oropeza (Nogales, Ariz./Nogales H.S.) accounted for all of Metro State's wins on the women's side. The duo won both of its doubles matches at the No. 1 position against CSUP and MSUB and Holopainen earned a pair of 6-1, 6-1 wins at No. 1 singles.
