Box Score COLORADO SPRINGS - Josh Belfrage (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista H.S.) scored with 10 seconds left in the second overtime as No. 14 Metropolitan State University of Denver stunned University of Colorado Colorado Springs 2-1 in Colorado Springs on Friday night. It was the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener for both teams as MSU Denver improved to 4-0-0 overall, while UCCS dropped to 1-3-1.
Belfrage's goal was the latest goal scored in school history at 109:50 when he headed in
Danny Arrubla (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton H.S.)'s corner kick, breaking the previous record of 109:17 by Mike Martinez against Colorado School of Mines on Oct. 27, 2006.
The Mountain Lions scored a late goal of their own to send the game to overtime as Conor Langenbahn scored off a loose ball in the box with just 8.8 seconds remaining in regulation. UCCS had an opportunity to win the game midway through the first overtime period when
Michael Jordahl (Denver, Colo./East H.S.) cleared a ball off the goal line.
Goalkeeper
James Tanner (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens H.S.), who had five saves in the game, saved his best of the night in the second overtime period, leaping to stop a high shot, and pushing it away from the net as he was falling back towards the goal line.
The Roadrunners scored the first goal of the game at 8:14.
Jeff Gillis (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill H.S.) headed a pass towards the top of the box and
Brock Labertew (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon H.S.) blasted a wide-open shot to the left side of the net for the early lead.
MSU Denver had plenty of opportunities to add to its lead in the first half, outshooting the Mountain Lions 8-3. But the tide shifted after halftime as UCCS outshot the Roadrunners 8-2 in the second half and 15-14 overall in the game.
The Roadrunners will host No. 6 Regis University at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday at The Regency Athletic Complex at MSU Denver in a battle of ranked teams.
