DENVER - No. 17 Metropolitan State University of Denver was victorious with an 87-51 defeat of Fort Lewis Saturday night at the Auraria Events Center. With the victory MSU Denver improves its overall record to 14-3, 9-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while Fort Lewis drops to 13-4, 8-3 in the RMAC.
Mitch McCarron (Brisbane, Australia/Genesis Christian College) scored a career high 31 points and shot 57 percent from the field, while going 11-of-12 from the free throw line. He also had five assists.
Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) helped out with 20 points, to go along with a season high 13 rebounds.
Obi Kyei (Sydney, Australia/Sydney Secondary College) had 10 points.
Sam Porter (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.) had eight rebounds.
Obi Kyei (Sydney, Australia/Sydney Secondary College) scored 10 points off the bench in the second half and
DeShawn Phenix (Fort Worth, Texas/North Crowley H.S.) added eight.
McCarron led the scoring in the first half with 17 points while going 5-of-9 from the field. Kay also kicked in with nine points to go along with five rebounds.
Jourdon Hunter (Denver, Colo./Kennedy H.S.) also contributed six points including 2-of-3 from 3-point land. MSU Denver shot 50 percent from the field, while the suffocating defense held Fort Lewis to 27 perfect from the field, and helped commit eight turnovers to take a 45-16 lead in the first half.
Fort Lewis went on a 14-4 run early in the second half to cut the lead to 49-30. MSU Denver then built the lead back up to 25 at 62-37 in the middle of the second half. Fort Lewis cut the lead to as low as 23 points but the Roadrunners built the lead even further.
Alex Herrera led the scoring for the Skyhawks with 17 points.
The Roadrunners shot 47 percent from the field for the game and scored 25 second chance points for the game, while Fort Lewis shot 30 percent.
MSU Denver is on the road next weekend as they travel to Colorado Mesa Friday at 7:30 p.m.
