GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Sam Porter (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.) scored a team-high 14 points and came up with a game-winning steal with two seconds remaining as No. 14/25 Metropolitan State University of Denver edged Colorado Mesa 51-50 in Grand Junction, Colorado, on Friday evening. The Roadrunners improved to 15-3 overall and 10-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CMU dropped to 13-5 and 8-4.
Porter's 14 points were a career high--the first double-digit game of the senior's career. He hit 2-of-3 from 3-point range and also had five rebounds.
After the Roadrunners came up scoreless despite two shot attempts on the same possession with a 51-50 lead, the Mavericks took over the ball with 18.7 seconds left. CMU guard Julian Vasquez drove from the top of the key, but Porter stripped him and took over possession near half-court with two seconds left to seal the win.
Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) added 11 points and five rebounds.
Mitch McCarron (Brisbane, Australia/Genesis Christian College) was held to seven points, but led the team with eight rebounds and five assists.
MSU Denver led 27-20 at halftime, but the Mavericks used a 7-0 scoring run to knot the score at 30-30 with 15 minutes left. It was close the rest of the way. Though the Roadrunners never trailed in the second half, they did not lead by more than four points after the 30-30 tie.
Jourdon Hunter (Denver, Colo./Kennedy H.S.) broke a 48-48 tie with a 3-pointer with 2:05 remaining for a 51-48 lead. CMU's Michael Melillo hit a pair of free throws for the game's final points with 1:25 left. MSU Denver held the Mavericks without a field goal in the final four minutes.
Vasquez scored a game-high 22 points, knocking down four 3-pointers.
The Roadrunners will play at Western State at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
