Women's basketball: Roadrunners fall in OT to Fort Lewis

DENVER - Metropolitan State University of Denver had its three-game winning streak snapped with a 65-61 overtime loss to Fort Lewis Saturday night at the Auraria Event Center. With the loss the Roadrunners drop to 10-5, 7-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Skyhawks improve to 9-6, 6-5 in the RMAC.
 
Deni Jacobs (Plains, Kan./Southwestern Heights H.S.) led the Roadrunners in scoring with 13 points to go along with six rebounds and two assists. Hannah Stipanovich (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton H.S.) set a new career high with 12 points. Kaysha Fox (Tacoma, Wash./Woodrow Wilson H.S.) set a new career high in assists with seven. Emily Hartegan (Frisco, Texas/Wylie East H.S.) and Kendra Jesik (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo South H.S.) both had eight points. Jesik also had six rebounds and was 2-of-3 from 3-point range.  
 
Stipanovich led the Roadrunners with 10 points in the first half including going from 5-of-6 from the field. Ohrdorf and Hartegan both had four points each. Kaysha Fox (Tacoma, Wash./Woodrow Wilson H.S.) contributed with three assists. MSU Denver held the Skyhawks to 32 percent from the field to lead 29-26 at the half.
 
MSU Denver led early in the second half until halfway through Dallas Dickerson hit two free throws to give Fort Lewis its first lead of the game. The teams then traded the lead back and forth until the four minute mark when the Roadrunners took a five point lead at 57-52. The Skyhawks defense stifled the Roadrunners into four turnovers late in the second half. Mary Brinton hit 1-of-2 free throws to tie the game at 57 with six seconds left to force the game into overtime.
 
Brinton opened the scoring in overtime, and then Jesik tied the game with a jumper. The Skyhawks then closed overtime with a 6-2 run to win 65-61.
 
Brinton led the Skyhawks and all scorers with 22 points. Katie Bayes also scored 14 points for the Skyhawks.
 
MSU Denver shot 45 percent from the field, while Fort Lewis only shot 35 percent. The Roadrunners committed 26 turnovers.
 
MSU Denver will be on the road next week as they travel to Colorado Mesa Friday night, at 5:30 p.m.
