GUNNISON, Colo. - Mitch McCarron (Brisbane, Australia/Genesis Christian College) and
Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) combined for 46 points as No. 14/25 Metropolitan State University of Denver routed Western State 73-50 on Saturday in Gunnison, Colorado. The Roadrunners improved to 16-3 overall and 11-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while WSCU dropped to 3-14 and 2-11.
McCarron had a game-high 25 points, burying 3-of-4 from 3-point range, and adding a team-high four assists. Kay scored 21 points and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, sinking 11-of-13 free throws.
Eric Rayer (Colorado Springs/Coronado H.S.) drained all three of his 3-point attempts to score nine points off the bench.
Sam Porter (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.),
Jourdon Hunter (Denver, Colo./Kennedy H.S.) and
Zoran Arsenovic (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East H.S.) each scored four.
MSU Denver won the turnover battle 6-to-17, while making 20-of-24 free throws as a team. The Roadrunners also shot 46 percent from the floor.
The Roadrunners held the Mountaineers to 38 percent shooting in the first half to lead 32-19 at the break behind 15 points from Kay.
MSU Denver outscored Western 11-4 over the first 7:30 of the second half to build its lead to 20. That lead stretched to as many as 26 points.
Devin Kastrup led Western State with 13 points.
MSU Denver will play at Chadron State on Friday.
