DENVER- The Metropolitan State University of Denver volleyball team kept its winning streak alive at eight in a row defeating New Mexico Highlands University in three sets. MSU Denver moved to 11-8 overall and 8-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. New Mexico Highlands drops to 6-12 overall with the loss and 2-7 in the RMAC.
Ryan Hoerdemann had a career day for MSU Denver with 12 kills and hit .800 for the match. She recorded no errors for the night. Hoerdemann set an MSU Denver record for hitting percentage in the rally scoring era (since 2001) eclipsing the previous mark held by Anna Mapes. Mapes set the previous best in 2010 hitting .762.
The first set went back-and-forth with the two teams battling for the lead. The Roadrunners hit .387 while holding New Mexico Highlands to .189 in the first set. MSU Denver was able to pull away and pick up a 25-17 win.
The Roadrunners defense stepped up in the second set and held New Mexico Highlands to a .028 hitting as a team. MSU Denver had a five point rally that put it up 16-12. Following a timeout by New Mexico Highlands, the Roadrunners were able to close out the second set by outscoring the Cowgirls 9-4 and take the win 25-16.
The third set was dominated by the Roadrunners who never trailed in the set. MSU Denver hit .361 while holding New Mexico Highlands to .125. The third set ended 25-15 with the Roadrunners on top.
The Roadrunners will be back in action Saturday afternoon to face Western New Mexico for the "Dig Pink" match at 4 p.m.. Fans who wear pink to the match will receive free admission.
