Denver – The Metropolitan State University of Denver notched another victory with a 3-0 sweep over No. 18 Colorado School of Mines. The Roadrunners are now 14-9 overall while the Orediggers are 17-5.
In the first set, the Roadrunners fell behind the Orediggers late, 21-23, before rallying back with four points to take the set 25-23. MSU Denver hit .447 in the first set, bolstered by
Michaela Smith (Littleton, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.)'s eight kills. Smith totaled 15 on the night.
In the second set MSU Denver continued to hit extremely well en route to another close 25-23 victory. The Roadrunners posted a hitting percentage of .429. The set was tied at 23-23 before MSU Denver locked down the final two points.
Vasati Fiatoa (Las Vegas, Nev./Bonanza H.S.) had six kills in the set and 12 total on the night.
In the third set the Roadrunners won a swift 25-20 victory to take the match. MSU Denver rushed out to a 20-10 lead, helped by
Brandi Torr (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva H.S.)'s eight digs. Torr also had 44 assists in the match, making this her seventh match this season with 40 or more.
The victory represents MSU Denver's second victory over a ranked opponent this season; both over Colorado School of Mines.
The Roadrunners will be back in action on Friday night at 7 p.m., at the Auraria Event Center against Regis University.
