Caldwell, Idaho – The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's basketball team defeated College of Idaho 55-45 on Saturday night. The Roadrunners move to 2-2 overall.
The Roadrunners were led in scoring by senior
Tony Dobbinson (Stamford, Conn./Westhill H.S.) with 16 points. Freshman
Enrique Cortés Zotes (Malaga, Spain/I.E.S. Litoral) posted a double-double scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
The game got off to a slow start with neither team scoring in the first five minutes of the game. Cortés Zotes scored the game's first points with a tip-in off of a miss by senior
Jourdon Hunter (Denver, Colo./Kennedy H.S.) with 14:48 in the first half. The Roadrunners defense was stifling in the first half not allowing a field goal until the 10:44 mark of the first half. MSU Denver went 7-of-32 from the field to shoot 21.9 percent and College of Idaho went 6-for-27 and shot 22.2 percent. MSU Denver trailed 20-19 at the half.
The Roadrunners would jump out to a 25-20 lead after scoring the first six points of the second half. MSU Denver would continue to expand the lead to nine with 14:00 to go after a made three-pointer by junior
Brian Howard (Maywood, Ill./Saint Ignatius H.S.). College of Idaho would go on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 35-35 with 10:23 left, however, MSU Denver would not relinquish the lead. The Roadrunners would respond with a 7-0 run of their own to make the score 42-35 with 6:27 to go and MSU Denver would not trail again.
MSU Denver will play in the Hilton Garden Inn Classic on Nov. 27-28. The Roadrunners face Southwest Minnesota State on Friday, Nov. 27 and Pittsburg State on Saturday, Nov. 28. Both games will be played at 7 p.m. in the Auraria Event Center.
