Colorado Springs, Colo. – The Metropolitan State University of Denver women's basketball team overcame a 17-point deficit to defeat Cal State East Bay 85-80 in overtime on Saturday night. The Roadrunners are 1-3 overall.
Sophomore
Hannah Stipanovich (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton H.S.) posted her first double-double of the season scoring 24 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Sophomore
Georgia Ohrdorf (Wollongong, Australia/St. Mary Star of the Sea College) was just shy of a double-double scoring 18 points and pulling down nine rebounds. Sophomores
J'Nae Squires-Horton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sand Creek H.S.) and
Emily Hartegan (Wylie, Texas/Wylie East H.S.) each reached double-figure scoring with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
The Roadrunners jumped out to a five point lead halfway through the first quarter after a Stipanovich jumper made the score 10-5. Cal State East Bay would outscore MSU Denver 14-5 over the final five minutes of the quarter. MSU Denver would trail 19-15 at the end of the first quarter.
MSU Denver would trail by seven after a Stipanovich made basket making the score 31-24 with 3:11 to go in the period. Cal State East Bay would go on a 12-2 run to close the quarter. The Roadrunners trailed 43-26 at the half. Stipanovich had 12 points and four rebounds through the first 20 minutes of play.
The second half began with MSU Denver scoring the first six points of the third quarter. The Roadrunners outscored Cal State East Bay 18-12 in the third quarter and would trail 55-44 entering the final period.
The fourth quarter would see the Roadrunners outscore Cal State East Bay 25-14 and force overtime. MSU Denver would take the lead with 51 seconds left in the fourth quarter for the first time since the first quarter on a three-point basket by Squires-Horton. The game would be tied 69-69 at the end of regulation.
The game would be tied at 77-77 after Cal State East Bay made two free throws. The Roadrunners would score the next six points to take an 83-77 lead. Cal State East Bay would cut the lead to three after a made three-point basket, but junior
Jenae Paine (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City H.S.) would make a layup with 13 seconds left to seal the victory for the Roadrunners.
MSU Denver will return to action on Nov. 27-28 to play in the Holiday Inn Denver Cherry Creek Classic. On Friday, Nov. 27 the Roadrunners will play Concordia (Ore.) and on Saturday, Nov. 28 they will face Southwest Minnesota State. Both games will take place at 5 p.m. in the Auraria Event Center.
