Salt Lake City – The Metropolitan State University of Denver women's basketball team was defeated 55-45 on Friday night by Westminster (UT) to fall to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in the RMAC.
The Roadrunners were led in scoring by sophomore
J'Nae Squires-Horton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sand Creek H.S.) with 15 points. Sophomore
Georgia Ohrdorf (Wollongong, Australia/St. Mary Star of the Sea College) was the team leader with nine rebounds in the contest.
MSU Denver started the game strong taking an early 14-8 lead following a 6-0 run capped by a layup by sophomore
Hannah Stipanovich (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton H.S.) with 4:01 to play in the first quarter. The Roadrunners would end the first quarter leading 16-13.
The second quarter saw Westminster go on an 8-2 run to take a 21-18 lead with 5:47 to go. MSU Denver would battle back and the game would be tied 24-24 at the half.
The Roadrunners would struggle in the third quarter and would be outscored 15-6. Stipanovich and freshman
Jonalyn Wittwer (Fall Creek, Wis./Fall Creek H.S.) would make the only two shots from the field for MSU Denver during the third quarter. MSU Denver would trail 39-30 going into the final period.
MSU Denver would cut the Westminster lead to two at 45-43 after Squires-Horton knocked down two free throws with 3:00 to play.
The Roadrunners shot 25.9 percent from the field on 15-of-58 shooting. Westminster outrebounded MSU Denver 40-32 in the game.
MSU Denver will travel to Grand Junction, Colo. to take on Colorado Mesa at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12.
