Grand Junction, Colo. – The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's basketball team defeated Colorado Mesa 76-69 to move to 4-5 overall and 2-1 in the RMAC on Saturday night. Colorado Mesa falls to 4-5 overall and 0-3 in the RMAC.
Senior
DeShawn Phenix (Fort Worth, Texas/North Crowley H.S.) led the team in scoring with 16 points. Senior
Jourdon Hunter (Denver, Colo./Kennedy H.S.) and junior
Brian Howard (Maywood, Ill./Saint Ignatius H.S.) each added 12 points and senior
Eric Rayer (Colorado Springs/Coronado H.S.) chipped in with 10 points. Sophomore
Peter Møller (Værløse, Denmark/Falkonergårdens Gymnasium) led the team in rebounding with seven.
The Roadrunners trailed 27-22 with 3:33 to go in the first half before going on an 8-0 run with Phenix scoring five-straight points and Hunter knocking down a three-point basket to close the half.
In the second half, the score would be tied 37-37 with 14:31 to play following two Colorado Mesa free throws. MSU Denver would use a 9-0 run over the next three minutes to take a lead that it would not give up.
The Roadrunners shot 50 percent for the game from three-point range including 5-of-9 in the first half.
MSU Denver will face Chadron State on Friday, Dec. 18 at the Auraria Event Center. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
