Softball: Mattey, Redmond lead Roadrunners to two wins in Texas

CANYON, Texas - Freshman Kenzie Mattey (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) fired a three-hit shutout to beat Cameron University 5-0 and Lani Redmond (Chandler, Ariz./Corona del Sol H.S.) had four hits in a 4-3 comeback win against Midwestern State as Metropolitan State University of Denver won two games on Friday in Canyon, Texas. The Roadrunners improved to 6-2 this season with their fifth straight win, while CU fell to 2-1 and MSU dropped to 3-4.

Mattey, the reigning Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference pitcher of the week, scattered three hits and one walk in seven innings, striking out four. No runner advanced past second base.

Kaylynn Harmon (Erie, Colo./Erie H.S.) hit an RBI double in the third inning to score Mary Towner (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.). That lead stretched to 3-0 in the fourth inning when Britney Thomas (Cheyenne, Wyo./East H.S.) drove in Colissa Bakovich (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) with a triple to left, and then scored on a wild pitch.

MSU Denver added two more runs in the seventh. Thomas finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Harmon had two hits.

Against Midwestern State, the Roadrunners dug themselves a 3-0 hole in the first inning. But starting pitcher Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) settled down to hold the Mustangs scoreless the rest of the way.

The offense got going in the third inning with three runs to tie the game. Bakovich led off with a single and scored on Towner's two-run double that also brought home Thomas. Towner scored on a single by Redmond.

Towner reached on an error to lead off the top of the seventh. After moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by Harmon, Redmond ripped a triple into the right-center gap and pinch runner Taryn Calori (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch H.S.) scored the game-winning run.

Nicole Larsen (Murrieta, Calif./Bloomington H.S.) replaced Smith in the seventh to earn the save, pitching around a one-out double.

MSU Denver will face Tarleton State and No. 1 West Texas A&M on Saturday.
