DENVER - Freshmen
Emily Hartegan (Frisco, Texas/Wylie East H.S.) and
Hannah Stipanovich (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton H.S.) combined for 42 points to lead Metropolitan State University of Denver to an 83-75 win at Regis University on Saturday night. The Roadrunners improved to 13-9 overall and 10-8 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Rangers dropped to 14-8 and 10-8.
Hartegan had 22 points, setting a new career high, and made 8-of-10 at the free throw line. Stipanovich scored 20, tying a career high that she set last weekend, shooting 9-of-16 from the floor and pulling down seven rebounds. The two players combined for all 42 of MSU Denver's bench points.
Deni Jacobs (Plains, Kan./Southwestern Heights H.S.) had 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Jenae Paine (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City H.S.) scored 16 points. Both Jacobs and Paine were 5-of-6 at the free throw line.
Brittany Curl (Absarokee, Mont./Absarokee H.S.) scored five points and had eight rebounds.
MSU Denver shot 21-of-26 at the free throw line in the game and outrebounded the Rangers 50-to-24, the best rebounding margin (+26) for the Roadrunners since 2012.
The Roadrunners rallied from a 39-38 halftime deficit, holding Regis to 34 percent shooting in the second half.
Trailing 72-71 with 2:43 remaining, MSU Denver outscored Regis 12-3 the rest of the way. Hartegan made a pair of free throws with 2:19 left to give MSU Denver a one-point lead. Jacobs then scored four straight points, including a layup and two free throws for a five-point lead. The Roadrunners made 8-of-10 free throws in the final 1:19.
MSU Denver will play at Fort Lewis on Friday.
