Softball: Towner's home run beats No. 11 Angelo State

CANYON, Texas - Mary Towner (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) belted a three-run home run in the sixth inning as Metropolitan State University of Denver erased a three-run deficit to win 7-6 over No. 11 Angelo State on Sunday in Canyon, Texas. The Roadrunners fell 13-3 earlier in the day to Texas Woman's University and are now 8-4 on the season. Angelo State dropped to 11-1 with its first loss of the season.

Trailing 6-3 in the top of the sixth inning, MSU Denver strung together a rally. After a one-out walk to Colissa Bakovich (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.), the Rambelles committed two errors, handing the Roadrunners their first run of the inning. Then Towner belted a three-run home run to left field, giving the Roadrunners a 7-6 lead.

Starting pitcher Kenzie Mattey (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) shut down the high-powered ASU offense in the final two innings, stranding a two-out single in the sixth and runners on second and third base to end the game. She earned the win, allowing six runs in seven innings, while striking out five.

Offensively, Towner finished 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and a home run. Bakovich was 2-for-3 with two doubles and Carissa Terry (Moreno Valley, Calif./Valley View H.S.) was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Terry, Bakovich, Kaylynn Harmon (Erie, Colo./Erie H.S.) and Lani Redmond (Chandler, Ariz./Corona del Sol H.S.) each had two hits in the loss to TWU.

MSU Denver will open conference play on Saturday against Colorado Christian. The series will be the first-ever games at The Regency Athletic Complex.
