Men's basketball: Roadrunners top No. 13 Mines behind 20 from Kay and McCarron

DENVER - No. 11/20 Metropolitan State University of Denver earned its seventh straight victory with a 67-57 win against No. 13/11 Colorado School of Mines Friday night at the Auraria Event Center. With the win, MSU Denver improves to 19-3, 14-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while Colorado School of Mines drops to 17-3, 13-3 in the RMAC.
 
Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) and Mitch McCarron (Brisbane, Australia/Genesis Christian College) both contributed with 20 points each, with Kay snagging 13 rebounds and McCarron dishing out three assists. Will Sinclair (Lilydale, Australia/Lilydale Heights College) had six points to go along with four rebounds and three blocks. Sam Porter (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.) had eight points. Eric Rayer (Colorado Springs/Coronado H.S.) and DeShawn Phenix (Fort Worth, Texas/North Crowley H.S.) both had four points each. 
 
McCarron was the leading scorer in the first half with 10 points. Kay tallied seven points while grabbing six rebounds.  The Orediggers jumped out to an early lead in the first half, and then the Roadrunners went on a 9-0 run to lead 16-11. Colorado School of Mines shot 39 percent while MSU Denver shot 41 percent from the field in the first half including 12-of-14 from the free throw line to take a 33-24 lead at the half.
 
Colorado School of Mines started the second half going on a 6-0 run to cut MSU Denver's lead down to three at 36-33. Phenix hit a layup with five minutes to go to put MSU Denver up 10 at 57-47. Gokul Natesan hit a free throw to cut the lead down to six at 57-51 with two minutes to go but that was all the Orediggers could cut the lead down to as the Roadrunners quickly jumped the lead back to 10.
 
Trevor Ritchie led the Orediggers in scoring with 17 points.
 
MSU Denver shot 42 percent from the field and the defense smothered Colorado School of Mines into committing 12 turnovers, while Colorado School of Mines shot 40 percent from the field.
 
The Roadrunners are back in action tomorrow as they host Colorado Christian at 7 p.m.
