TUCSON, Ariz. - Freshman
Kenzie Mattey (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) had a strong outing and
Mary Towner (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) ripped two doubles to give Metropolitan State University of Denver its first win of the season on Friday night, a 5-1 victory over Molloy (N.Y.) after a 7-4 setback to Central Oklahoma earlier in the evening. The Roadrunners are now 1-1 on the season after the first day at the National Fastpich Coaches Association Leadoff Classic in Tucson, Arizona.
Mattey scattered four hits and struck out seven in six innings in her first career appearance.
Towner went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs batted in.
Britney Thomas (Cheyenne, Wyo./East H.S.) and
Kaylynn Harmon (Erie, Colo./Erie H.S.) each had two hits as well. Harmon drove in two runs and Thomas scored twice.
MSU Denver jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third on five hits, including four straight at one point.
Towner drove in Thomas in the fourth with her second double of the game to round out the scoring.
The game was shortened to six innings due to a light curfew in Tucson.
The Roadrunners had 10 hits in their loss to UCO earlier in the day, led by two each from
Susie Oury (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.),
Lani Redmond (Chandler, Ariz./Corona del Sol H.S.) and Towner. Oury, Towner and freshman
Carissa Terry (Moreno Valley, Calif./Valley View H.S.) each homered as well.
MSU Denver will face No. 3 Dixie State tomorrow before the tournament splits into bracket play.
