Box Score 2 TUCSON, Ariz. - Metropolitan State University of Denver edged Texas Woman's University 4-3 on Saturday night in Tucson, Arizona, in bracket play at the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Leadoff Classic. The Roadrunners are in the Silver Bracket after falling 9-1 to No. 3 Dixie State (Utah) earlier in the day in pool play. MSU Denver is now 2-2 on the season.
Kenzie Mattey (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) struck out five in 3 2/3 innings of relief to earn the win against TWU.
Lani Redmond (Chandler, Ariz./Corona del Sol H.S.),
Mary Towner (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.),
Carissa Terry (Moreno Valley, Calif./Valley View H.S.) and
Chelsea Brew (Colorado Springs/Rampart H.S.) each had two hits. Redmond had a pair of doubles, including a leadoff double in the second that led to the first run after
Amanda Taney (Conifer, Colo./Conifer H.S.) drove her in later in the inning.
Towner had an RBI single and scored a run on Redmond's second double of the game in the third inning for a 3-0 lead.
After TWU scored twice in the fourth, MSU Denver answered with another in the fifth as Brew drove in
Kaylynn Harmon (Erie, Colo./Erie H.S.) after a leadoff walk.
Freshman
Sarena Espinoza (Corona, Calif./Corona Centennial H.S.) highlighted the game against Dixie State with a solo home run in the fifth inning in a pinch-hitting appearance in her first career plate appearance.
The Roadrunners will face conference-foe Regis University in non-conference action on Sunday at 8 a.m. in the Silver Bracket semifinals.
