DENVER - Julian Garcia (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge H.S.) threw a one-hitter in Game 2 as Metropolitan State University of Denver swept Colorado Christian 5-4 and 4-1 in a doubleheader on Saturday at The Regency Athletic Complex at MSU Denver. The Roadrunners improved to 7-8 overall, while CCU dropped to 7-12.
Garcia allowed a single to lead off the second game, a run that later scored with the aid of an error, and he struck out nine batters and did not walk anyone in a 4-1 victory.
Meanwhile
Jake Thurston (Centennial, Colo./Grandview H.S.) hit a game-tying home run to left in the first inning to tie game and MSU Denver took a lead in the second with a double by
Nick Comito (Lakewood, Colo./Mullen H.S.).
Andrew Paust (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) later provided two-run home run to add some insurance.
Darryl Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth for an extra-inning victory in Game 1.
Trailing 4-2 after the top of the sixth, MSU Denver scored one in the bottom of the inning on a double by
Mitch Gibbons (Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) and tied it up in the bottom of the seventh after a two-out single by
Trent Maloney (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) brought in Thurston, who tripled earlier in the frame.
Jeff Levett (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) walked with one out in the ninth and stole second. He scored on a two-out single by Baca to left field.
Ryan Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) earned the win in relief with three shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out three.
The two teams will meet for one game on Sunday at noon.
