WICHITA, Kan. - Metropolitan State University of Denver's men's and women's tennis teams both lost on Wednesday at Newman University, with the men falling 5-4 and the women being shut out 9-0 to the 46th-ranked team in NCAA Division II. The men's team dropped to 7-6 overall this season, while the women fell to 2-7.
The Roadrunners got off to a great start in doubles on the men's side as
Calum Hayes (Leeds, England/Guiseley H.S.) and
John Qualls (Henderson, Nev./Foothill H.S.) won 8-6 at No. 2 and
Sam Stember (Melbourne, Fla./Satellite H.S.) and
Ludvig Henrikson (Täby, Sweden/Danderyds Gymnasium) won 8-1 at No. 3. But MSU Denver only came out on top in two of the singles matches.
Nick Baker (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit West H.S.) fought back for a 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles and
Trevor Jones (Vancouver, Wash./Mountain View H.S.) won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6.
The Roadrunners return home on Friday to face Cameron University.
