DENVER – The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team won two games on Sunday, defeating conference opponents Black Hills State and N.M. Highlands and improved to 23-9 on the season, 14-4 in the RMAC.
The Roadrunners defeated Black Hills State in game one by a final score of 4-1. The game was tied 1-1 entering the bottom of the fifth inning when the Roadrunners scored three runs. Back-to-back sacrifice flies by
Carissa Terry (Moreno Valley, Calif./Valley View H.S.) and
Annika Anderson (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) followed by a solo homerun by
Sarena Espinoza (Corona, Calif./Corona Centennial H.S.) accounted for the three-run inning. Espinoza finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a homerun and a double.
Lani Redmond (Chandler, Ariz./Corona del Sol H.S.) went 1-for-2 with two walks, a run scored and a stolen base.
Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) allowed five hits over seven innings and struck out five.
In game two, the Roadrunners defeated N.M. Highlands 11-2 in five innings. MSU Denver trailed 1-0 entering the bottom of the second inning when the Roadrunners exploded for four runs.
Amanda Taney (Conifer, Colo./Conifer H.S.) started the scoring off with a double down the left-field line to tie the game at one. Later in the inning, Collissa Bakovich had a two-RBI single to put MSU Denver up for good at 3-1.
Lani Redmond (Chandler, Ariz./Corona del Sol H.S.) followed with a double to make the score 4-1. The Roadrunners would add three runs in the third and four in the fourth. Leading the charge was
Mary Towner (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) who went 2-for-3 and posted two RBIs.
Kaylynn Harmon (Erie, Colo./Erie H.S.) also had a strong game at the plate finishing 3-for-3 with a homerun and three RBIs.
Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) picked up her third win of the weekend as she pitched all five innings, striking out three.
The Roadrunners are back in action with a double-header on Friday, April 3 against Fort Lewis in Durango, Colorado.
