Softball: Espinoza, Harmon hit big in split at Fort Lewis

DURANGO, Colo. - Metropolitan State University of Denver split the doubleheader with a 12-2 win in game one and 7-6 loss in game two to Fort Lewis College Friday in Durango, Colo. With the split MSU Denver brings its record to 24-10, 15-5 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, following the split Fort Lewis goes to 13-20, 11-11 in the RMAC.

The Roadrunners jumped out early in game one with a two-run first inning thanks to a squeeze bunt by Kaylynn Harmon (Erie, Colo./Erie H.S.) scoring Susie Oury (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.), then Serena Espinoza single to score Mary Towner (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.). The score remained the same until the bottom of the fourth inning when Myndee Thompson hit a solo home run to cut the lead to 2-1.

In the fifth inning, Harmon reached on a fielding error by the third baseman to score Susie Oury (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.) and Lani Redmond (Chandler, Ariz./Corona del Sol H.S.) to bring the lead to 4-1. Another error by Fort Lewis scored Harmon and Towner to take 6-1 lead. Carissa Terry (Moreno Valley, Calif./Valley View H.S.) singled to score Espinoza to bring the Roadrunner lead to 7-1. Colissa Bakovich (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) reached on another Fort Lewis error to score Taryn Calori (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch H.S.) and extend the lead to 8-1.

The Roadrunners would then score four more in the sixth with help from a two-run, pinch hit home run from Annika Anderson (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.).

Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) pitched a complete game giving up two runs. At the plate, Harmon and Espinoza each had four RBIs.

In game two, Fort Lewis jumped out early with a seven-run first inning. MSU Denver chipped away on the lead getting it to 7-6 in the sixth inning with a Harmon sac fly, but that was all the Roadrunners could score.

Smith came in relief for MSU Denver in game two giving up no runs and striking out two.

The two teams play again tomorrow with the first game starting at 11 a.m.
