Complete Release (PDF)

INDIANAPOLIS -
Metropolitan State University of Denver men's basketball player Mitch McCarron (Brisbane, Australia/Genesis Christian College) was named National Association of Basketball Coaches national player of the year on Tuesday. It is the second consecutive year a Roadrunner has earned the award, just the fifth time in NCAA Division II history the national player of the year has come from the same school in consecutive years. McCarron joins Mark Worthington (2005) and Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.) (2014) as past Roadrunners to earn national player of the year from the coaches association.

This season, McCarron is joined by Wisconsin's Frank Kaminsky and Cabrini's Aaron Walton-Moss, the Division I and Division III national players of the year, respectively.

A 6-foot-3 senior point guard, McCarron  led the Roadrunners to a 26-6 record and their third consecutive Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular season championship, averaging 20.2 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists. He shot 49 percent from the floor and 85.9 percent at the free throw line. McCarron finished the season ranked in the top 50 nationally in scoring; assists; free throws made, attempted and percentage; and minutes played. He was named RMAC player of the year earlier this month and second team All-America by Daktronics/Conference Commissioners Association and Basketball Times. Against Colorado Christian in the RMAC tournament, he recorded the third triple-double in school history with 11 points, 11 rebounds and 13 assists.

Also an excellent student, McCarron carries a 3.85 grade point average and earned Capital One first team Academic All-America, RMAC academic player of the year and the RMAC Summit award, given to the men's basketball player with the highest GPA at the conference championship site.

McCarron, Kaminsky and Walton-Moss will receive their awards from the NABC at the Final Four this weekend.
